As a Mainframe Engineer, you will be working for our client, a major financial institution, on a transformative project aimed at modernizing their core banking systems. This project involves the development, maintenance, and support of payment-related services, including SEPA payments, SWIFT messages, and internal accounting entries. You will be an integral part of the Regional EMEA IT Payments team, ensuring that both existing and new systems meet the highest standards of efficiency and reliability.

Your main responsibilities:

  • Developing and maintaining existing batch processing jobs and workflows
  • Supporting and enhancing payment batch processing workflows
  • Investigating and troubleshooting production defects
  • Collaborating with the application delivery team and business stakeholders to ensure safe and accurate delivery of enhancements and new features
  • Working with mainframe developers and support teams to complete housekeeping and operational support activities
  • Introducing new practices and tools to improve efficiency with the central mainframe team
  • Following Agile and DevOps methodologies using tools like Jira, Confluence, and SharePoint
  • Collaborating with Business Analysts and Project/Product Managers to translate business requirements into development sprints
  • Participating in an on-call rota to manage production issues as needed
  • Assisting in the modernization of functionality by transitioning from mainframe to a microservice architecture

You’re ideal for this role if you have:

  • Strong knowledge of COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, and other mainframe technologies with 8-10 years of experience
  • Proficiency with mainframe software development tools and platforms (z/OS, z/VM, z/Linux, IBM System z)
  • Experience with peripheral mainframe tools such as REXX Tool, TWS Scheduler, and configuration management tools like Endeavor or Turnover
  • Familiarity with VSAM data sets and flat file structures on z/OS
  • Comfort with building end-to-end applications using protocols such as MQ, R2DS, CD (Connect Direct), sFTP, or NDM
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills

It is a strong plus if you have:

  • Knowledge of additional programming languages such as Java
  • Experience with microservices architecture and cloud technologies
  • Exposure to Agile and DevOps practices and tools beyond the basics
