As an IBM z Systems Programmer, you will be working for our client, a global leader in financial services, focusing on the optimization and stability of critical DB2 environments on IBM z Systems. You will play a vital role in ensuring the high availability, performance, and security of database systems that underpin their worldwide operations. This position involves hands-on database management, performance tuning, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to support and enhance a reliable, efficient, and scalable database infrastructure.
Your main responsibilities: Administer and maintain DB2 environments, including upgrades, backups, and recoveries
- Install, configure, and customize DB2 software and associated tools such as Broadcom/CA utilities and Guardium
- Monitor and optimize DB2 performance, proactively addressing potential issues
- Troubleshoot and resolve DB2-related software and performance issues
- Develop REXX scripts for automation and enhanced database interactions
- Ensure compliance with security standards and regulatory requirements
- Collaborate with application developers and operations teams for database optimization
- Document processes, changes, and disaster recovery plans for DB2 environments
- Train and mentor team members, sharing technical expertise
- Provide on-call support for production databases, ensuring high system availability
You’re ideal for this role if you have:
- A degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
- Extensive experience as a systems programmer in IBM z/OS environments, particularly DB2
- Proficiency in DB2 utilities (e.g., LOAD, REORG, RUNSTATS) and backup strategies
- Strong skills in SQL, JCL, REXX scripting, and database automation tools
- Expertise in database performance optimization and query tuning
- Familiarity with SMP/E for software installation and maintenance
- Analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills for engaging with technical and non-technical teams
- A collaborative approach with the ability to lead technical initiatives
- Experience mentoring team members and fostering skill development
It is a strong plus if you have:
- Certifications in DB2 or IBM z/OS
- Experience managing large-scale, highly available database environments
- Knowledge of access control mechanisms and security tools for sensitive databases
- Familiarity with regulatory standards such as GDPR
- A proactive attitude towards system improvement and efficiency
